When I sat down to design the Nicolas Headband, I wanted something versatile, stylish, and quick to knit. It’s officially the newest member of the Nicolas family, joining the Nicolas Bonnet (free pattern here), Nicolas Hat (free pattern here), and Nicolas Cowl (free pattern here). Now, whether you’re knitting for a newborn or a large adult, this free knit headband pattern has got you covered.
The Nicolas Headband is perfect for those chilly days when you want your ears warm without committing to a full hat. It’s also a great stash-buster project—ideal for leftover yarn from bigger projects. I used Premier Yarns Stitch Please Superwash Worsted (affiliate link) for its softness, durability, and stunning stitch definition.
Why I Love This Free Knit Headband Pattern
Let’s talk practicality. I love that the Nicolas Headband works up quickly on size 7 circular needles, making it a satisfying weekend project. Plus, the free knit headband pattern includes sizes from newborn to large adult, so you can whip one up for everyone in your family.
But what really makes this headband special is how it ties into the Nicolas collection. Whether you’re pairing it with the Nicolas Cowl (free pattern here) or gifting it alongside the Nicolas Bonnet (free pattern here) or Nicolas Hat (free pattern here), this headband rounds out the set perfectly.
Yarn Matters
For this project, I turned to Premier Yarns Stitch Please Superwash Worsted (affiliate link). It’s everything I want in a yarn: easy care, super soft, and available in a gorgeous array of colors. The superwash wool means it’s perfect for everyday wear, whether you’re gifting it or keeping it for yourself.
And let’s be real—if you’re like me, choosing the yarn is half the fun! I opted for a rich, jewel-toned teal for my sample, but this free knit headband pattern would look stunning in neutrals, pastels, or even a variegated yarn for added flair.
Behind the Scenes: Designing the Nicolas Headband
Every time I design a piece for the Nicolas line, I think about coziness, functionality, and timeless style. With the headband, I knew I wanted something that was easy for beginners but also satisfying for experienced knitters.
Using size 7 circular needles gave me the perfect balance of structure and stretch. The pattern features clean lines and a simple texture that works beautifully with the stitch definition of Premier Yarns Stitch Please Superwash Worsted (affiliate link).
Styling the Nicolas Headband
One of the best things about the Nicolas Headband is its versatility. You can wear it to keep your ears warm on brisk morning walks, pair it with a ponytail for running errands, or even dress it up with a matching coat and scarf.
When I modeled my sample, I paired it with the Nicolas Cowl (free pattern here) for a sleek and coordinated look. And if you have little ones, the newborn size makes an adorable addition to their winter wardrobe!

Tips for Knitting the Nicolas Headband

Notes – Nicolas Headband is knit in the round. I used an Italian Cast on and Bind off to have matching edges. You may use whichever matching and stretchy cast on/bind off you like. Also note, I am a left-handed knitter so your cables may appear to be twisted opposite mine if you are a “normal” knitter. That is okay and will not affect the project outcome.
