When I look back on the first few months of my daughter Bethany’s life, I am filled with a mix of emotions—gratitude, hope, and an overwhelming sense of love. Her journey was not an easy one; she spent the first four months of her life in the NICU, fighting for every breath. It was during this challenging time that knitting became my solace, a way to channel my hopes and dreams for Bethany into something tangible and beautiful. This is the story behind the Bethany Pixie Bonnet and Baby Blanket, the first new pattern I designed after Bethany came home.

A New Beginning

Bethany’s homecoming was a momentous occasion. It felt like the start of a new chapter, one filled with the promise of growth and healing. To commemorate this new beginning, I wanted to create something special for her, something that embodied the strength and resilience she had shown in those early months. Thus, the Bethany Pixie Bonnet was born.

The Inspiration

The Bethany Pixie Bonnet is a blend of vintage charm and modern elegance. Its climbing diamond lace pattern represents the obstacles Bethany overcame and the growth she experienced. The pixie shape adds a whimsical touch, making it a delightful piece for any little one. The corded ties give it a vintage feel, reminiscent of the classic bonnets worn by babies in eras past.

Choosing the Yarn

For this special project, I chose Hobbii Rainbow Bamboo yarn. This yarn is incredibly soft and gentle on the skin, making it perfect for delicate baby items. The bamboo fibers give it a beautiful sheen and drape, ensuring that the bonnet not only looks stunning but also feels luxurious. The yarn’s breathable properties make it suitable for all seasons, keeping little ones comfortable year-round.

The Design Process

Designing the Bethany Pixie Bonnet was a deeply personal and therapeutic process for me. Each stitch felt like a step towards healing, a way to process the emotional rollercoaster of the past few months. The climbing diamond lace pattern required focus and attention, allowing me to immerse myself fully in the creative process.

As I knit, I thought about the journey Bethany had been on—the struggles, the victories, and the incredible strength she had shown. Each diamond in the lace pattern became a symbol of hope, a reminder that beauty can emerge from even the most challenging circumstances.

Adding a Personal Touch

I wanted the bonnet to be more than just a piece of clothing; I wanted it to carry a piece of our story. The corded ties were a deliberate choice, inspired by the vintage bonnets I had seen in old family photographs. They added a touch of nostalgia and connected the bonnet to a lineage of love and care.

The Bethany Baby Blanket

In addition to the pixie bonnet, I also designed a matching baby blanket. This blanket features the same climbing diamond lace pattern, creating a cohesive set that is both beautiful and meaningful. The blanket is a testament to the warmth and comfort I wanted to wrap Bethany in, a tangible representation of the love and protection I wished to provide.

Crafting the Blanket

The blanket design process mirrored that of the bonnet. Using the same Hobbii Rainbow Bamboo yarn, I created a piece that was both soft and sturdy, capable of withstanding the cuddles and play of an active baby. The diamond lace pattern required careful attention, but the repetitive nature of the stitches was soothing and meditative.

A Gift of Love

Both the Bethany Pixie Bonnet and Baby Blanket have become cherished items in our home. They are more than just knitted pieces; they are symbols of resilience, love, and the power of creativity to heal and inspire. Whenever I see Bethany wearing her bonnet or snuggled up in her blanket, I am reminded of how far we have come and the strength we found in each other.

Sharing the Pattern

After completing the bonnet and blanket, I felt a strong desire to share the pattern with other knitters. I hoped that it could bring the same sense of comfort and joy to others as it had to me. I released the pattern for free, wanting it to be accessible to anyone who needed a reminder that beauty can emerge from difficult times.

A Community of Support

The response from the knitting community has been overwhelmingly positive. I have received countless messages from fellow knitters who have made the Bethany Pixie Bonnet and Baby Blanket for their own little ones or as gifts for loved ones. Each message is a testament to the power of community and the shared joy that knitting can bring.

Continuing Bethany’s Journey

Bethany’s journey is far from over, and so is mine. As she grows, I continue to find inspiration in her resilience and joy. The Bethany Pixie Bonnet and Baby Blanket are just the beginning. I have many more patterns and projects in mind, each one a tribute to the strength and love that carried us through those early months.

Conclusion

The Bethany Pixie Bonnet and Baby Blanket hold a special place in my heart. They are a celebration of Bethany’s journey and a reminder of the incredible strength we discovered within ourselves. Through the act of knitting, I found a way to process my emotions, create something beautiful, and connect with a community of supportive and caring individuals.

As I continue to design and create, I carry with me the lessons learned from those early days. I am reminded that no matter how challenging the journey, there is always the potential for beauty, growth, and healing. And with each new stitch, I celebrate the love and resilience that define our story.

Abbreviations

k – knit
P – purl
sl – slip stitch
yo – yarn over
k2tog -knit 2 stitches together
ssk – slip next st knitwise, slip next st knitwise, place stitches back onto left needle, knit both slipped sts together
I-cord Ties:
Cast on 3sts on double pointed needles and work i-cord for appx 9-10ins for personal use and 12-14ins for photography use. To make an i-cord tie pick up 3 sts on the side edge of the bonnet near the face on double pointed needles. Slide these sts to the right of your needle. Knit the row. Slide the sts to the right of the needle. Knit the row and slide the sts to the right of the needle. Continue in this manner until you reach your desired length, occasionally giving the resulting cord a gentle tug.
3 Needle Bind Off:
Separate your work onto 2 needles (if using circulars no need). Fold so right sides are together. With a spare needle of the same size insert into the first stitch on the front and back needle and knit the 2 stitches together. Repeat with the next 2 stitches. Bind off the first stitch by pulling it over the second stitch and dropping it off your needle. Repeat until all stitches are bound off. If you have an uneven number of sts just bind off the last stitch without knitting 2 together.
