There’s something extra special about a handmade knit that tells a story—and the lace pixie bonnet and blanket pattern I’m sharing today is overflowing with heart. These two pieces were born out of one of the most emotional seasons of my life: the first few months with my daughter, Bethany, who spent her early days in the NICU.
This lace pixie bonnet and blanket pattern isn’t just soft and pretty (though it is definitely both!). It’s a pattern woven with hope, healing, and love—a beautiful set that’s now available as a free download so you can make one too.
A Pattern with Purpose
When Bethany finally came home after four long months in the NICU, I knew I wanted to knit something just for her. Not just any hat or blanket—but a design that captured her story. And so the lace pixie bonnet and blanket pattern was born.
This sweet pixie bonnet has a gentle point at the back and delicate corded ties, and the matching blanket wraps baby in the same airy, climbing diamond lace that decorates the bonnet. Every stitch in this pattern feels like a prayer, every row like a memory.
Designing Through the Tears (and Smiles)
Working on the lace pixie bonnet and blanket pattern helped me process all the emotions that came with Bethany’s early days—grief, gratitude, and everything in between. Designing it wasn’t just creative—it was therapeutic.
The lace stitch itself is a climbing diamond pattern, which felt perfect for our story. It reminded me of all the hurdles she overcame and the strength she showed even in her tiniest, most fragile days.

Choosing the Yarn (affiliate link)
For both pieces in the lace pixie bonnet and blanket pattern, I used Hobbii Rainbow Bamboo yarn (affiliate link), and oh my goodness, this yarn is dreamy. It’s soft enough for delicate baby skin, has a gorgeous silky drape, and breathes like a dream—perfect for everything from spring photo shoots to snuggly nap time.
I loved how this yarn (affiliate link) worked with the lace stitch—it shows off the openwork beautifully without being stiff or scratchy. Plus, it holds up really well to gentle wear (and washing!) which, let’s be real, is super important with baby knits.
The Bonnet Details
This pixie-style bonnet features that adorable little point at the back that I just can’t get enough of. And the corded ties? They give it a vintage touch that feels timeless.
The lace pixie bonnet and blanket pattern is knit flat and seamed up the back, making it a quick and satisfying project—even if you’ve never knit lace before. The stitch pattern is simple enough to memorize after a few repeats but still keeps your interest going.
The Matching Blanket
When I finished the bonnet, I just knew it needed a cozy companion—so the baby blanket version practically designed itself. I used the same lace stitch as the bonnet to make a matching set, and let me tell you, it’s adorable in photos.
The blanket from the lace pixie bonnet and blanket pattern is knit flat and has a lovely balance of eyelets and stockinette, making it feel soft and airy. It’s big enough for swaddling or tossing over a car seat, and small enough to tuck into a diaper bag for on-the-go cuddles.
Using the same Hobbii Rainbow Bamboo yarn (affiliate link), the finished blanket has a lovely drape and a hint of sheen that makes it feel extra luxurious.

Knitting as a Way to Heal
Every time I picked up my needles to work on this lace pixie bonnet and blanket pattern, it felt like I was knitting a little more strength into my own heart. Knitting gave me something to hold onto during a time when everything felt uncertain.
Designing this pattern helped me reflect on how far Bethany had come—and how far we had come together. It felt like stitching a love letter, one that I could wrap around her tiny shoulders.
A Gift That Keeps Giving
The lace pixie bonnet and blanket pattern quickly became one of my favorite sets to gift. Whether you’re knitting for your own baby, a grandbaby, a friend’s baby shower, or a photographer’s prop closet—this set is always a hit.
And honestly, there’s nothing sweeter than seeing a newborn all snuggled up in something you made with your own hands. It’s a labor of love in every sense of the word.
Sharing Our Story
I knew from the beginning that I wanted to make the lace pixie bonnet and blanket pattern a free download. This set is just too special not to share. And I’ve been blown away by the messages I’ve received from fellow knitters who have made this pattern for their own little ones.
From NICU mamas to baby photographers, this pattern has taken on a life of its own—and I am so honored to be part of that.

Yarn Substitutes and Tips
If you can’t get your hands on Hobbii Rainbow Bamboo yarn (affiliate link), look for a similar DK or light worsted weight bamboo or bamboo-blend yarn with a soft hand and nice drape. Cotton-bamboo blends also work beautifully, especially for warm-weather babies.
Make sure to block both the bonnet and the blanket to open up the lace pattern. It makes a huge difference! You’ll go from “That’s cute” to “WOW” after a gentle steam block.
Final Thoughts
This lace pixie bonnet and blanket pattern holds a piece of my heart. It’s a pattern born from one of the hardest and most beautiful seasons of my life, and I hope it brings comfort and joy to every knitter who makes it.
Knitting isn’t just about needles and yarn—it’s about love, resilience, and finding peace one stitch at a time. And this set is a reminder of all of that.
So go grab your favorite bamboo yarn (affiliate link), clear off your needles, and get ready to create a precious photo prop set that’s as meaningful as it is beautiful.

I-cord Ties:
Cast on 3sts on double pointed needles and work i-cord for appx 9-10ins for personal use and 12-14ins for photography use. To make an i-cord tie pick up 3 sts on the side edge of the bonnet near the face on double pointed needles. Slide these sts to the right of your needle. Knit the row. Slide the sts to the right of the needle. Knit the row and slide the sts to the right of the needle. Continue in this manner until you reach your desired length, occasionally giving the resulting cord a gentle tug.
3 Needle Bind Off:
Separate your work onto 2 needles (if using circulars no need). Fold so right sides are together. With a spare needle of the same size insert into the first stitch on the front and back needle and knit the 2 stitches together. Repeat with the next 2 stitches. Bind off the first stitch by pulling it over the second stitch and dropping it off your needle. Repeat until all stitches are bound off. If you have an uneven number of sts just bind off the last stitch without knitting 2 together.
