Free Cable Photo Prop Pattern: Cozy Cables 3 Piece Set

As a knitter and mom of eight, I’ve tested my fair share of baby knits. But let me tell you—this Cable photo prop pattern has totally won me over! It’s the Cozy Cables Set, and it includes a matching beanie, bonnet, and shorts. The cables are actually faux (so no cable needle juggling needed), and the whole set is just too good not to share. I’m talking timeless texture, practical shaping, and newborn-ready comfort.

You’ll find this Cable photo prop pattern at the bottom of this post, but I’ve got even more props for you to explore over on my photo prop pattern page!

Why I’m Obsessed With This Cable Photo Prop Pattern

There’s something special about knitting a set that looks fancy but feels effortless. That’s exactly what this Cable photo prop pattern brings to the table. With just a touch of texture in the ribbing—no actual cable needle required—you get all the visual charm of cables with none of the hassle.

And if you love knitting for newborn photo sessions, you’re going to be just as smitten as I was.

Yarn Matters (Yes, Even for Props)

For this one, I used KnitPicks Wool of the Andes worsted yarn (affiliate link). It’s one of those workhorse yarns I keep coming back to. Here’s why:

  • It’s soft enough for delicate baby skin
  • It holds up through handling and storage
  • It comes in a ton of colors, so I could do my usual neutral thing or get playful if I wanted

For the main color, I went with classic white (affiliate link). It’s a clean, versatile choice that photographs beautifully. For the faux cable ribbing on each piece, I added a subtle contrasting neutral (affiliate link) that gave the whole set some soft definition. And the final look? Chef’s kiss.

The Beanie: Simple + Sophisticated

Let’s start with the beanie from this Cable photo prop pattern. This little hat looks fancy thanks to the twisted rib brim, but it’s secretly super easy. Since it’s just a faux cable, you don’t need a cable needle—just a clever little knit-purl combo that creates texture and depth.

The crown is simple stockinette, which lets the yarn’s texture (affiliate link) shine. It fits snug on those teeny newborn heads, and the contrast brim gives it that framed-photo magic.

The Bonnet: A Vintage-Inspired Dream

Next up in this Cable photo prop pattern lineup is the bonnet—and oh my word, I love a good baby bonnet. This one keeps that same cozy ribbing on the edge but wraps around in a sweet little frame. It ties neatly under the chin and actually stays put during a shoot (major win).

Like the beanie, it’s worked in that soft white yarn (affiliate link) with a gentle contrast for the ribbing (affiliate link). The result? A classic look with modern comfort. And the faux cables? They look way more advanced than they are. That’s the magic (okay… not that kind of magic) of smart stitch design!

The Shorts: Tiny, Stretchy, and Totally Adorable

The third piece in this Cable photo prop pattern is a pair of baby shorts—and they might be my favorite part. They knit up quickly, the fit is forgiving, and the ribbed waistband and cuffs bring the whole look together.

These little bottoms are made in—you guessed it—white yarn (affiliate link), with that same faux cable ribbing in the neutral contrast (affiliate link). They’re stretchy enough to pull on easily, but snug enough to stay in place during a photo session. Perfect for wiggle-prone newborns.

And the best part? You can mix and match the shorts with either the beanie or bonnet for different photo looks without reknitting a thing.

What Makes This Cable Photo Prop Pattern So Great?

Here’s why I’ll be knitting this Cable photo prop pattern again (and again):

  • Beginner-friendly: No cable needle needed
  • Timeless design: Neutrals + faux cables = classic
  • Full set: Hat, bonnet, AND shorts
  • Yarn flexibility: Works beautifully with Wool of the Andes (affiliate link), but would look great in lots of worsteds
  • Customizable: Use any color combo to fit your style or client’s vision

Whether you’re stocking a photo prop stash or knitting a keepsake for a friend, this pattern checks all the boxes.

A Few Tips If You’re New to Faux Cables

Never knit a Cable photo prop pattern before? You’ll be just fine! Faux cables are all about twisting stitches or strategically placed knit/purl combos that look like cables. No extra tools. No fuss. Just clever ribbing that catches the light and gives that luxe cable vibe.

If you can do a 1×1 rib, you can do this.

Final Thoughts on My New Favorite Cable Photo Prop Pattern

I’ve knit a lot of props over the years, but this Cable photo prop pattern has earned a permanent spot in my go-to list. It’s sweet, it’s snuggly, and it works beautifully for both baby girls and boys thanks to the clean lines and gender-neutral palette I used.

Whether you knit it in the exact colors I did using KnitPicks Wool of the Andes (affiliate link) or swap it for your own palette, I think you’ll love this pattern as much as I do.

Don’t forget—this pattern is at the bottom of this post, but there are so many more options over on the photo prop pattern page. Dive in and make something beautiful!

P.S. If you end up knitting this set, I’d love to see it! Leave a comment or tag me on Instagram with your finished Cozy Cables Set from this Cable photo prop pattern. Let’s keep those baby knits coming!
