This Quick Baby Gift Knit is a simple newborn beanie pattern made with sport weight yarn, and it is a sweet little project to add to your list of free hat knitting patterns.

If you need a baby gift that feels thoughtful but does not take forever to make, the Newborn Everyday Beanie is such a good choice. This tiny hat is designed for newborn babies and uses simple 1×1 ribbing, a folded brim, and sport weight yarn to create a soft, stretchy fit for those early weeks. It is a Quick Baby Gift Knit that works well for baby showers, hospital bags, new parent gifts, or those moments when you want to make something handmade without starting a huge project.

Quick Baby Gift Knit: Newborn Everyday Beanie Free Knitting Pattern

The Newborn Everyday Beanie is a smaller, lighter version of my classic Everyday Beanie patterns. It keeps the same practical details I love, including the fold-up brim, stretchy ribbing, and tidy crown shaping, but it is made just for newborn sizing.

This is the kind of Quick Baby Gift Knit I like to keep in my back pocket because it is easy to reach for again and again. It is simple, useful, and small enough that you can finish it without committing to a long project.

What Materials Do You Need for This Quick Baby Gift Knit?

For this Quick Baby Gift Knit, I used some leftover yarn but Knitpicks Brava Sport is a great option. It is a sport weight yarn that creates a lightweight fabric while still giving the hat enough stretch and softness for a newborn baby.

The Newborn Everyday Beanie uses approximately 75–100 yards of yarn, a yarn needle, and stitch markers. You will also need US size 3 / 3.25 mm circular needles and DPNs, or your preferred needles for working a small hat in the round.

Because this is a baby project, I always appreciate using a yarn that is easy to care for. New parents have plenty going on already, so a machine washable yarn is a big win for a handmade newborn gift.

This hat is sized for newborn babies around 6–12 pounds, with a head measurement of approximately 30 cm. The 1×1 ribbing gives the beanie plenty of natural stretch, which helps it fit comfortably during those tiny newborn days.

The folded brim also makes the fit a little more adjustable. It adds extra warmth around the ears, but the hat can also be worn unfolded for a slightly slouchier look.

How Is This Newborn Beanie Made?

This Quick Baby Gift Knit is worked in the round from the brim to the crown. The body of the hat is made in simple 1×1 ribbing, which means you will alternate knit and purl stitches throughout the main section.

The folded brim is created from the length of ribbing, so there is no separate piece to sew on later. Once the body of the hat is long enough, the crown is shaped with decreases using ssk and k2tog.

One of my favorite details on this little beanie is the clean X-style decrease at the top. It gives the finished hat a neat, polished look without making the knitting complicated.

DO NOT BIND OFF. Cut yarn leaving about a 20cm tail (or long enough to weave in ends). Pull yarn through remaining stitches and cinch the top tight. Weave in ends. Block as desired.

This hat is very versatile. It can be worn folded as pictured or unfolded like a slouchy style.
