Free Cable Headband Knitting Pattern: You'll Love Ezra Ear Warmer

The Ezra Headband is one of those small projects that feels satisfying from the very beginning. The cable detail gives it that pretty raised texture, but the pattern itself stays simple enough to enjoy between bigger projects.

It is also a great way to practice cables without committing to a sweater, cardigan, or anything that needs a lot of shaping. You get texture, stretch, and a finished project that is actually useful in everyday life.

What Materials Do You Need for This Cable Headband Knitting Pattern?

For this cable headband knitting pattern, I used Berroco Vintage Worsted, which gives the Ezra Headband a soft feel, nice stretch, and really pretty stitch definition. Cables look best when the yarn lets the texture stand out, and this yarn does a beautiful job of keeping the twists crisp without making the headband feel stiff or bulky.

You will also need size 7, or 4.5mm, needles, a yarn needle, stitch markers, and a cable needle. The headband is knit in the round, so you can use circular needles or double pointed needles, depending on what feels most comfortable for you.

Worsted weight yarn works especially well for this design because it gives the headband enough warmth without making it too heavy. If you are knitting for babies or kids, a soft yarn that feels good against the skin is definitely worth choosing.

This is also a wonderful stash-friendly project because it only uses a small amount of yarn. If you have leftover worsted weight yarn from hats, sweaters, or mittens, this cable knit headband pattern is a great way to turn those scraps into something wearable.

How Do You Knit the Ezra Cable Headband?

The Ezra Headband is knit in the round, starting with ribbing, then moving into one repeat of the cable stitch pattern, and finishing with another section of ribbing. That simple construction keeps the headband stretchy, comfortable, and easy to wear while still giving you a pretty cable detail across the center.

The cable itself is worked with simple twisted stitches using a cable needle. Once you work through the repeat, the pattern starts to feel very rhythmic, which makes this a great cable ear warmer knitting pattern for knitters who want something textured but not overwhelming.

Because the design is worked in the round, there is no seaming at the end. After you bind off in pattern, you just weave in your ends and your headband is ready to wear.

This is a good project for adventurous beginners who already know how to knit, purl, cast on, bind off, and work basic ribbing. If cables have felt intimidating before, this small headband is a much easier place to start than a large garment.
