As a passionate knitter and avid photographer, I’m constantly on the lookout for patterns that combine beauty and functionality. The Tab Beanie is one such gem—a charming hat designed for newborns that doubles as a stylish everyday accessory. Crafted with worsted weight yarn and adorned with a large wooden button sewn onto a decorative tab, this beanie is both practical and photogenic.

Why the Tab Beanie Stands Out

Versatile Design

The Tab Beanie’s design is straightforward, making it an excellent project for knitters of all skill levels. The worsted weight yarn gives it a cozy and comfortable feel, perfect for keeping little ones warm. The addition of a large wooden button sewn onto a decorative tab adds a touch of rustic charm that makes this beanie stand out.

Perfect for Newborn Photography

When I was a photographer, I was always looking for props that enhance the natural beauty of newborns without overpowering them. The Tab Beanie does just that. Its simple design frames a baby’s face beautifully, while the wooden button adds a touch of personality and texture. Whether you’re a professional photographer or a parent wanting to capture those precious early moments, this beanie is a perfect choice.

Everyday Use

Beyond photography sessions, the Tab Beanie is a practical accessory for everyday use. Its snug fit ensures that it stays in place, keeping your little one warm and comfortable. The worsted weight yarn is durable and can withstand frequent washing, making it a practical choice for busy parents.

The Story Behind the Pattern

Every knitting project has a story, and the Tab Beanie is no different. I first came across this inspiration for this pattern while browsing through a collection of vintage knitting books that were my grandma’s. I saw a sweater pattern with the buttoned tab that caught my eye, and I knew I had to try it.

Finding the Perfect Yarn

Choosing the right yarn for this project was crucial. I opted for KnitPicks Wool of the Andes Worsted, fjord heather, brass heather, cherry heather, and bramble heather neutral color. The yarn’s texture and weight were perfect for creating a cozy, comfortable hat that’s gentle on a newborn’s delicate skin. The many colors available also ensured that the beanie would complement any outfit or photography setup. You can purchase the yarn here.

The Button Hunt

Finding the perfect button for the tab decoration was a bit of a treasure hunt. I wanted something that added a touch of rustic charm without being too overwhelming. After scouring several craft stores, I asked my husband to make me a large wooden button that was just right. Its natural finish and smooth texture added the perfect finishing touch to the beanie.

The Knitting Experience

Knitting the Tab Beanie was a delightful experience. The pattern’s simplicity made it easy to follow, and the repetitive stitches were meditative. As I knitted, I imagined all the adorable babies who would wear the beanie, both in photo sessions and in their everyday lives.

Simple Yet Satisfying

The Tab Beanie’s simplicity is one of its greatest strengths. The basic stitches and straightforward construction make it accessible to beginners, while the finished product looks polished and professional. I loved watching the hat take shape, knowing that it would be both functional and beautiful.

The Decorative Tab

One of my favorite parts of the knitting process was creating the decorative tab. It’s a small detail, but it adds so much character to the beanie. Attaching the large wooden button was the final touch, and it brought the whole design together beautifully.

Tips for Knitting the Tab Beanie

Choosing the Right Yarn

When selecting yarn for the Tab Beanie, consider a worsted weight yarn that is soft but also wool. This will make the hat comfortable for the baby and give beautiful stitch definition. Neutral colors are great for versatility, but feel free to experiment with different shades to match your style or the baby’s wardrobe.

Blocking the Beanie

Blocking the beanie after knitting will help it hold its shape and give it a professional finish. Simply soak the hat in lukewarm water with a bit of mild soap, gently squeeze out the excess water, and lay it flat to dry. Blocking is especially important if you’re planning to use the beanie in newborn photography, as it ensures the hat looks its best.

Customizing the Beanie

Feel free to get creative with the Tab Beanie pattern! You can use different colors of yarn, add embellishments, or even experiment with different types of buttons. Personalizing the beanie makes it a unique gift for newborns or a special keepsake.

Final Thoughts

The Tab Beanie is more than just a knitting project; it’s a labor of love. Whether you’re creating it as a photography prop, an everyday hat, or a heartfelt gift, the time and effort you put into making this beanie will be cherished for years to come.

Knitting is a wonderful way to express creativity and create something meaningful. The Tab Beanie, with its simple design and charming details, is a perfect example of how a little bit of yarn and a few hours of knitting can result in something truly special.
