This Chunky Knit Beanie Pattern is a quick, practical, and family-friendly project, and it is part of my free hat knitting pattern collection for knitters who want a simple beanie that works for everyone.
If you have ever needed a fast hat pattern for a gift, a cold-weather project, or a matching family set, the Peace Beanie is such a good one to have ready. This Chunky Knit Beanie Pattern uses chunky weight yarn, simple texture, and clear sizing from newborn through adult large, so you can make one for just about anyone. It is worked in the round with a stretchy brim, easy knit and purl texture, and straightforward decreases at the crown. The result is a warm, wearable beanie that looks polished without being complicated.

The Peace Beanie is one of those patterns that feels useful right away. It is simple enough to knit while chatting or watching something, but the alternating texture keeps it from feeling boring.
Because this Chunky Knit Beanie Pattern uses chunky yarn, it works up quickly and makes a great last-minute project when you need a handmade gift fast.
What Materials Do You Need for This Chunky Knit Beanie Pattern?
For this Chunky Knit Beanie Pattern, I used Premier Yarns Anti-Pilling Bamboo Chunky. It is soft, smooth on the needles, and a great choice for a beanie that may get worn often. I love that it has enough thickness for warmth, but it still feels comfortable instead of overly heavy.
This pattern uses size 10 US / 6 mm needles, along with a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round. The hat is knit in the round, and you will need DPNs or your preferred small-circumference method when you get to the crown decreases.
The Peace Beanie also begins with a stretchy cast on. I used the Italian cast on because I like the clean edge it gives the brim, but you can use your favorite stretchy cast on if that feels better to you.

The sizing is one of my favorite parts of this pattern. It includes newborn, baby, toddler, child, adult small, and adult large, which makes it easy to knit matching hats or choose the exact size you need.
The materials are simple, the stitch pattern is easy to follow, and the finished beanie has that sturdy everyday feel that makes it easy to grab again and again.
How Is the Peace Beanie Knit?
This Chunky Knit Beanie Pattern is worked bottom up in the round. You will start with a stretchy cast on, join for working in the round, and then work a short section of 1×1 ribbing for the brim.
After the brim, the body of the hat uses a simple repeat made from garter stitch rounds and 1×1 ribbing rounds. Since garter stitch is worked differently in the round than it is flat, you will alternate knit rounds and purl rounds to create that ridged texture.
The main repeat gives the Peace Beanie a clean, simple look with just enough detail to make it interesting. It is not fussy, but it still has texture and structure.

When the hat reaches the right length, you will work the crown decreases using k2tog and ssk decreases. The top is cinched closed instead of bound off, which gives the beanie a neat finished crown.
This is a great project for knitters who are comfortable with knits and purls and ready to practice working in the round, changing between simple stitch sections, and shaping a hat.
What Other Peace Collection Patterns Can You Make?
If you enjoy the look of this Chunky Knit Beanie Pattern, you may also like the other patterns in the Peace Collection and a few similar beanie designs.

The Peace Collection uses simple texture in a way that feels classic and easy to wear. These are the kinds of patterns that make great gifts because they are practical, pretty, and not overly complicated.

You can also add a pompom to the Peace Beanie if you want to give it a little extra personality. A yarn pompom would make it fun and playful, while a faux fur pompom would give it a more finished look.
