If you’ve been hunting for free sock knitting patterns, you’re in the right place! On this page, you’ll find a growing collection of socks in every style—whether you love the look of classic cables, delicate lace, simple plain knits, or want to try both top-down and toe-up construction (the toe-up designs are newer, and I’m adding more soon!). I’ve included socks with gusset heels and short row heels, as well as ankle socks, no-show socks, and traditional crew length socks. Many of these patterns pair beautifully with some of my favorite sock yarns, like Malabrigo Sock (affiliate link) and KnitPicks Stroll (affiliate link), both of which give amazing stitch definition and wear well over time.
Top-Down Sock Knitting Patterns
These free top-down sock knitting patterns begin at the cuff and work down through the leg, heel, foot, and toe for a classic sock construction that many knitters know and love. They are a great choice when you enjoy ribbed cuffs, textured leg details, traditional heel flaps, and watching the sock take shape from the top down. From simple everyday pairs to socks with lace, cables, and other stitch patterns, these top-down designs give you plenty of options for handmade gifts, family knitting, and adding more socks to your own drawer.

Toe-Up Sock Knitting Patterns
These free toe-up sock knitting patterns are a great choice when you want to begin at the toes, try the socks on as you go, and use as much of a favorite skein of sock yarn as possible. Each pattern starts with the toe and works upward through the foot, heel, leg, and cuff, giving you a practical way to customize the length as you knit. From simple everyday socks to pairs with lace or textured details, these toe-up sock patterns are designed to help you make comfortable handmade socks for yourself, gifts, and family knitting.

I love that socks give us so many options to play with stitches, techniques, and yarns, and I hope this page makes it easy for you to find the perfect pattern for your next project. And don’t forget—more patterns (especially toe-up!) are on the way, so check back often.

Thank you for these. Lots to try out. It’s summer so doing ankle socks. Just finished 2nd pair and have a list of six friends to make more for! Going to try the toe up, as I’ve always done top down.
